Abstract:
Feijoa sellowiana is a subtropical fruit shrub, with favorable possibilites in international markets.
Unlike New Zealand and other countries Colombia has never introduced agronomic programs to encourage the handling of cultivars.
The INCCA University and National Center of Feijoa (CENAF) has been carrying out one scheme in agronomic investigation to get up a national germplasm to attain new genotypes by conventional vegetative crossing, grafting, cuttings and stakes in order to obtain improved clones.
This project has completed 2 000 test cultivars with 15 000 trees.
For the first results in vitro the rate of propagation was 1 : 15 however the limited factor is the stem elongation in some clones.
Previous experiments have shown that the shoots can be taken directly to the greenhouse to form roots in ex-vitro conditions.
With optimized cultural practise they got two harvests per year with a production of 25 t/ha/year (50 – 100 kg/tree).
