Abstract:
In Aserri (1 500 m above M.S.L.), province of San Jose in Costa Rica, between january and june of 1988, the effect of manual pollination with two types of pollen, natural pollination (with 'Ein Shemer'), and self pollination on fructification of 'Anna' variety was studied.
Treatments with artificial pollination were done using pure pollen of the national varieties 'Noyle' and 'Quintanilla' and of the imported cultivar 'Jonathan'. The trees submitted to artificial pollination were enclosed in fine plastic mesh.
Best results in terms of less fruit drop, greater seed number, higher effective fructification and total fruit weigth, less parthenocarpic fruits and better fruit form, had treatments with manual pollination particularly when pollen of 'Noyle' and 'Quintanilla' were used.
In all treatments average fruit weight was similar.
