Abstract:
The apple tree originates from places of temperate climate.
When grown out of its normal ecological environment, it presents anomalies and very often does not develop because its growing cycle in tropical and subtropical regions is very different from that of temperate areas.
The alterations of the ecological environment are those concerning the climate and the soil.
Soil conditions can be overcome by applying adequate nutrients.
Climate conditions are more difficult to override.
Water and light availability may interfere, but temperature is the most important factor.
When there is not enough chilling from breaking dormancy some abnormalities occur: many buds remain dormant even when the climatological conditions are suitable.
In order to overcome the problems concerning the growth of the apple tree in tropical and subtropical regions it is assential to adopt a series of cultural practices and the application of chemicals to compensate the lack of cold.
The selection of adaptable cultivars and the choice of places of higher altitude are also fundamental for the success of apple growth.
Among the cultural practices, pruning and training deserve special attention.
The application of chemicals must take into account the time of application, the products to be used and their concentration, besides the level of bud dormancy.
