PROPAGATION, GROWTH AND FLOWERING OF POTTED ROSES

Abstract:
Potted roses are important potplants for sale in the spring in Norway. Cultivars which belong to the Polyantha group, f.i. 'Mother's Day' and 'Margo Koster', are mostly used. They are traditionally grafted on Rosa multiflora L. root stock, and imported dormant plants are forced to flower. The quality is not always satisfactory. This may be due to:

Grafted plants have a large root system and require a relatively large pot.
The strongly growing root stock (R. multiflora) results in too high and voluminous plants. This may to a certain degree be prevented by using a proper forcing-program and certain growth retardants as shown by Moe (1970).
Uneven bud break and shoot growth.
The quality of the imported plants is not always satisfactory.

The purpose of the following experiments was to find a way of producing potted roses from cuttings. The present study deals with the effect of temperature, light, and growth substances on root formation, growth and flowering.
