Abstract:
Virus, virus-like disease of pome and stone fruits have been proved important in lowering the yield and quality.
Therefore sanitary program for virus-free plants has been conducted in many parts of the world and found useful.
Initial surveys in Libya and identification by symptoms have revealed the presence of pear stony pit, pear decline, and gummosis of stone fruit (as the farmers call it) which is caused by different causal agents and should be studied by a group of plant pathologists.
Accordingly a sanitary program is initiated with objectives to identify the virus, virus-like diseases present, survey of vectors, initiation of disease-free nursery stock for distribution to farmers and finally importing some well known germplasm according to horticultural needs, suitable for Libyan climatic conditions for improvements of the pome and stone fruit industry.
