COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT METHODS TO PRODUCE VIRUS FREE STONE FRUITS

Authors:   M. Barba, L. Martino, F. Lauretti
Abstract:
In vitro micrografting and thermotherapy were applied to eliminate Plum pox (PPV), Apple chlorotic leaf spot (ACLSV), Prune dwarf (PDV), Prunus necrotic ringspot (PNRV) and Apple mosaic (ApMV) viruses from one or more different varieties of plum, peach and almond.

Plum plants and two varieties of peach suffered for the heat treatment and the apical shoots were not suitable to be grafted on healthy rootstocks, while no problems arised during micropropagation.

According to the virus and the specie considered both techniques acted effectively in freeing plants from considered viruses, even if in different percentage.

Most of the viruses were more easily eliminated by micrografting than by thermotherapy and only PDV could not be eliminated from almond by micrografting.

Complete elimination of PPV from plum and ACLSV from plum and peach was achieved by using in vitro micrografting technique.
