ISHS Acta Horticulturae 307: IV International Symposium on Carnation Culture

PROGENY ANALYSIS OF CROSSES BETWEEN GENOTYPES RESISTANT AND SUSCEPTIBLE TO FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM F. SP. DIANTHI RACE 2.

Authors:   P. Arús, M. LLauradó, J. Pera
Abstract:
Rooted cuttings of individuals from different progenies of crosses between resistant and susceptible genotypes of standard carnation were inoculated with F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi, race 2. Inoculations were done by dipping the roots into a solution with a measured concentration of spores of the pathogen. Disease symptoms were determined using a 0–4 scale and the results were compared to a set of controls of known level of resistance. The distribution pattern of susceptible and resistant phenotypes among the progenies suggested that the genetic basis of the resistance is complex. A genetic hypothesis is proposed to account for these results, and breeding strategies designed to obtain highly resistant genotypes are discussed.
