ISHS Acta Horticulturae 307: IV International Symposium on Carnation Culture

DISTRIBUTION OF CARNATION MOTTLE VIRUS AND CARNATION RINGSPOT VIRUS IN THE BOGOTA SABANA

Authors:   M. Valenzuela, M. Pizano
Abstract:
An investigation on the distribution of Carnation Mottle Virus and Carnation Ringspot Virus in carnation nurseries in Colombia is being carried out. Although, symptoms produced by this viruses are not always clearly evident and may be masked by environmental conditions; they do decrease productivity and hamper flower quality.

The two viruses in question were detected both by Enzyme Lynked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and inoculation into the indicator plant Chenopodium amaranticolor. All samples were taken from young tissues of SIM-type carnations, Mediterranean varieties and spray (miniature) carnations since reports found elsewhere establish varietal differences in susceptibility to the viruses.

Preliminary results show that both viruses are found wherever carnations are grown in Colombia and that Carnation Mottle Virus is found with higher frequency than Carnation Ringspot Virus.
