"STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF SOME MINERAL DEFICIENCIES ON GREENHOUSE CARNATIONS (Dianthus caryophyllus) IN HYDROPONIC CULTURE"

Author:   L.A.T. Medina
Keywords:   Carnation, Mineral Nutrition, Deficiency Symptoms, Foliar Analysis
Abstract:
The effect of nutrient deficiencies of N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg and B on greenhouse carnations cv. "Tanga" was studied in hydroponic culture. N deficiency symptoms consist in a generalized chlorosis of plants, strong reduction in growth and shortening of the internodes. K deficiency appeared with irregular necrotic spots on the leaves, as well as brittle stems and sugar exudations on the stems. Slight symptoms were observed in P deficiency (darkening foliage) and in Ca deficiency (weakening and slight clhorosis of young shoots). Flower production was reduced 40% in N deficiency. The highest calix splitting was observed in minus-K treatment. Dry matter production was reduced 30% in minus-N treatment and consequently nutrient extraction was low. Average nutrient extraction per plant for all treatments at 59th week after planting was 2.2 g N, 0.5 g P, 3.2 g K, 0.3 g S, 1.2 g Ca, 0.4 g Mg, 0.2 g Na, 21 mg Fe, 16 mg Mn, 7 mg Cu, 7 mg B and 31 mg Zn. Foliar analysis showed decreasing levels of N, P, K, Ca and Mg under the corresponding deficiencies. The first symptoms of N deficiency appeared when foliar N level was below 2% in dry matter. Symptoms of K deficiency appeared when foliar K was below 1% in dry matter.
