ISHS Acta Horticulturae 307: IV International Symposium on Carnation Culture

CARNATIONS: THE MAIN PRODUCT OF COLOMBIAN FLORICULTURE

Author:   M. Gómez

Abstract:
As International Manager of the Colombian Association of Cut Flower Exporters - ASOCOLFLORES, it is an honour to address an auditorium so highly specialized in floriculture. The Fourth International Symposium on Carnation held in Santa Fe de Bogotá is a worldwide recognition of the importance of Colombia in the international flower market. In no more than 25 years, we have been able to place ourselves as a strong nation in flowers exports, becoming the second international exporter of fresh cut flowers, and the first one in carnations. This is the best demonstration of the dynamism of our entrepreneurs and the capacity of a developping country to succesfully penetrate international markets.

I would like to center my speach on a brief statistical analysis of carnations within the structure of our flower exports. I believe this kind of a resume can be of some interest to this auditorium who has concentrated its attention mainly in the study of carnation technical advances. Therefore, I hope my speach will give you a different and complementary insight.
