ISHS Acta Horticulturae 307: IV International Symposium on Carnation Culture

QUALITY ASSURANCE OF CARNATION PROPAGATING MATERIAL

Author:   I. J.E.M. van Ruiten
Abstract:
To recognize and qualify the quality of carnation cuttings in the Netherlands an independent inspection and certification system was built up since 1947 by NAKS. Certification of pathogen-tested material as nuclear stock, propagation stock and certified stock makes clear that high graded material is produced. The European Community now plans to introduce marketing regulations and possibly certification systems for ornamentals by January 1993. From that time onwards, only identified cuttings that meet certain minimum health standards can be marketed. Each carnation cutting producing nursery shall be registered and will be made responsible to produce only classified cuttings.

To inspection authorities they must make clear that no phytosanitary risks are present. Internal nursery-quality assurance will be necessary.
