Abstract:
A method for the large scale production of Hymenocallis littoralis (Pancratium littorale) by tissue culture is described.
This species serves as an effective source of pancratistatin, a powerful anticancer agent, as well as an attractive landscape ornamental.
Chemical analysis of field- and greenhouse-grown, tissue-culture derived plants revealed that pancratistatin is produced primarily in bulbs and, to a lesser degree, in roots, but not in leaves or seeds of this species.
Bulbs cultivated in Arizona produced ca. 9–24 mg/kg f.w. pancratistatin compared with earlier reports of 144 mg/kg from bulbs grown in Hawaii (Pettit et al., 1984b). The reason for this difference is unknown.
