THE USE OF BLACK PLASTIC MULCH AND RIDGES IN THE PRODUCTION OF HERBICIDE FREE HERBS

Authors:   B. Galambosi, Zs. Szebeni-Galambosi
Abstract:
Black plastic mulch as well as ridges were studied for herbicide-free production for seven different herb species in Pumala, southern Finland. Both methods raised the soil temperature from 0.2 °C to 6 °C and increased yields by 20 – 40 %. These methods can be partly mechanized and decrease the need for manual weed control by 65 – 80 %. At cooler climates, plantings produced higher and safer yields than direct sowing.
