SEASONAL VARIABILITY IN THE CONTENTS AND COMPOSITION OF ESSENTIAL OIL IN VARIOUS THUJA SPECIES OCCURRING IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA

Authors:   I. Buben, M. Karmazín, J. Trojánková, D. Nová
Abstract:
The preparations of the plant drug Summitas Thujae were used in the form of extracts or tinctures in the treatment of rheumatism and gout, in dermatology for removing of various kinds of warts and condylomas. When applied orally as abortives or anthelminties a potent toxic effect manifested by serious gastroenteritidis, tonic and clonic convulsiones, unconsiousness, heavy damage of kidneys and liver may appear. Wooden dust, especially that of Thuja plicata, releases histamine from pulmonary tissue producing thus asthmatic attacks. An antibiotic activity of thujaplicine is even mentioned in the literature. Recently, an increasing attention has been paid to Thuja occidentalis due to its antiviral and immunostimulatory properties.

We observed the content and composition of essential oils, obtained by steam-destillation from 5 various Thuja species occurring on 4 geonomically different localities in Czechoslovakia during one year. The experiments were realised for the reason of standardization of the drug and preparations made from it.

The content of essential oils in Thuja species under study differs in leaves in the range of 0,53 % - 5,25 %, in wood in the range of 0,12 % - 0,60 % (Table 1).

We tried to identify at least major components of essential oils (their concentration 5 %) by means of gas chromatography. In the following table (Table 2) their maximal concentration in different chemotype of Thuja is summarized.

A great variability of the main component of Thuja plicata was found on both localities. While on the Kostelec locality the main component was sabinene or thujone, on the Pruhonice locality, sabinene was found to be the main component in all cases.
