Abstract:
The aims of the manipulation of floricultural crops with light treatments are, in addition to the photoperiodic control of flowering, to influence (generally reduce) elongation (compactness, length for cutting) to influence the release of lateral buds (branching), and the pigmentation of plants and flowers (colour and ornamental performance). Possible ‘tools’ are the Red/Far-red ratio (phytochrome), the amount of Blue light and near Ultra-Violet (UV-A cryptochrome) as well as UV-B (UV-B photoreceptor), and photoperiod (phytochrome and a circadian biological clock). Reduction of elongation and increased branching by light treatments may reduce the need for chemical growth retardants.
