TOMATO FRUIT SET AND COMPETITION FOR ASSIMILATES, DURING THE EARLY PRODUCTION PERIOD. |

| Abstract:
In winter the number of set fruits decreases rapidly from the fifth cluster. The relation between fruit set and plant load depends on the ratio between assimilate supply and demand. Supply was improved by CO2 enrichment to 1000 ppm, and demand was limited by truss thinning to 3 or 7 flowers. Increasing the assimilate supply leads to an intensified demand, but is not sufficient to improve the number of set fruits on the upper clusters. Limiting the demand regularizes the number of fruits per truss, but involves big and unmarketable fruits. Criteria for assessing this ratio during the whole production period, are necessary to simulate tomato development. | |
