ISHS Acta Horticulturae 303: Protected Cultivation, XXIII IHC

REDUCTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION BY RECIRCULATION OF DRAINWATER IN SUBSTRATE CULTURES.

Author:   C.J.M. Vernooij
Abstract:
A closed production system in which the air, soil and water are not or less charged is the pursuid goal of the glashouse industry in the Netherlands.

In substrate cultures recirculation of drainwater can reduce the consumption of water by about 30 and of fertilizers by more than 50 percent.

Good (rain-)water makes recirculation also possible for crops that are sensitive to sodium.

Spreading root diseases has so rarely been a problem that a collective insurance can make recirculation more common applicable and is probable cheaper than disinfection.
