Abstract:
Methods of isolation and enumeration of L. monocytogenes from environmental samples were tested for suitability for use with compost samples, in order to be able to determine wether composting would provide an effective method of treating sewage sludge prior to land-spreading.
Techniques involving cold pre-enrichment followed by enrichment were compared with a more rapid method of enrichment in a highly selective medium.
Results to date infer that isolation from such highly contaminated samples is best achieved by MPN using cold enrichment, followed by enrichment with naladixic acid, potassium thiocyanate and acriflavine added as inhibitors.
