ISHS Acta Horticulturae 302: International Symposium on Compost Recycling of Wastes

URBAN SOLID WASTE PROCESSED BY MEANS OF COMPOSTING AND INCINERATION WITH ENERGY RECOVERY

Author:   F. Angiolo
Abstract:
The proposed plant scheme includes two processes: composting of the organic fraction of solid waste, and incineration of the reject with energy recovery. The solid waste is usually loaded and processed in a rotary bioreactor, which acts in three different ways: mixing of components, fragmentation of materials, oxigenation of the whole mass for aerobic process enhancing and spreading.

The organic fraction involved is selected from the rejects by a rotary screen and from the ferrous and inorganic impurities by the magnetic and balistic separators, and then automatically conveyed to accelerated composting section, carried out in windrow system or in aerated piles (addition of sludges is possible).

Composting of the organic fraction of refuse is accomplished in the open maturation yard.

The process, performed in hygienic conditions and without unpleasant odors, permits to obtain in a reasonable time a good quality product containing humus, fit for agricultural use.
