Abstract:
Cucumber plants infected by cucumber green mottle mosaic tobamovirus (CGMMV) were composted.
In the compost pile the highest temperature (72° C) was recorded on the third day of composting period.
CGMMV was biologically detected in samples until the third day of composting.
Cucumber seedlings grown in pots containing a mixture of 25% cucumber composted material + 75% light peat did not become infected.
Storage of dried samples from CGMMV-infected cucumber plants in an incubator at 72° C resulted in inactivation of the virus after two days.
Elimination of CGMMV in cucumber plant residues during composting seems to result mainly from heat inactivation.
