Abstract:
Field application of compost can only be allowed for quality composts having reached a maturity degree which will not damage crops.
It is therefore necessary to state basic criteria for compost characterization.
This paper reports some chemical, physical and biological parameters for evaluating the maturity and stability of composts of different origin.
Special attention was paied to the evaluation of humified organic substances (humic acids and fulvic acids) and to the biological assays giving a comprehensive judgement on compost stability (phytotoxicity assay, nitrogen mineralization and respiration assay).
