WASTE MATERIALS AS POTTING MEDIA FOR OLIVE GROWTH

Authors:   M. Tattini, M.L. Traversi, R. Barberis, P. Nappi, P. Kociolek
Abstract:
The use of waste materials in olive pot growth as partial replacement of peat was tested. A comparison was carried out among peat and sand (50/50 v/v) substrates obtained by replacing 50% of peat with grape stalks + municipal sludge and poplar bark + dairy sludge, respectively. Dry matter production and linear growth (above all lateral shoot formation) were greately enhanced following the introduction of the wastes in the peat based substrate, when using both irrigation and fertigation treatments. In this regard, in addition to both a good inorganic availability and buffer properties, humic content of the wastes seems to play a fundamental role.
