ISHS Acta Horticulturae 302: International Symposium on Compost Recycling of Wastes

EVALUATION OF COMPOSTED SEWAGE SLUDGE/STRAW FOR THE RECLAMATION OF DERELICT LAND: THE RECLAMATION OF COLLIERY SPOIL

Authors:   S.L. Atkinson, J.M. Lopez-Real, G.P. Buckley
Abstract:
Composted sewage sludge/straw produced at Canterbury Sewage Treatment Works in Kent is being tested as a produce suitable for the reclamation of derelict land.

One field trial is being carried out at Betteshanger Colliery spoil tip in the Kent coalfield. The experiment has been designed to determine the effect of different rates of compost application (up to approximately 200 tonnes dry solids/ha on the yield of amenity grass mixtures and on the growth of amenity trees. Two different methods of applying the compost are also being studied.

The results obtained from the field studies so far indicate that composted sewage/sludge straw improves the yield of grass growing on colliery spoil, yield increasing in proportion to the rate of compost application.
