EFFECT OF TOWN REFUSE COMPOST AS SOIL AMENDMENT ON GREENHOUSE TOMATO CROP |

| Abstract:
To evaluate the effectiveness of experimentally produced town reruse compost of Heraklio, as soil conditioner, on a greenhouse tomato crop, the following experiment was conducted : Part of the compost produced was left in open air, under rainfall, during the winder of 1985–86 (rainfall treated compost - RTC) and the remainder was protected from rain (rainfall untreated compost - RUTC). RTC and RUTC was added to the soil as follows : Two plots received sequential additions of 5, 2.5 and 1.25 m3 of RTC and RUTC and another two received sequential addition of 10, 5 and 2.5 m3 of RTC and RUTC, per 1,000 m2 of soil during the year 1988 and 1989. Soil without any compost treatment served as a control. The five treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with four replicate plots to seven plants each. All treatments were fertilized similarly through the irrigation system. The tomato yields of the second and third crops were evaluated, because a part of the cucumber yield of the first crop was destroyed by Botrytis cinerea. The data obtained showed significantly higher tomato yield when the sequential additions of compost were 10, 5 and 2.5 m3/1,000 m2 of soil, independently of the rainfall treatment. | |
