Abstract:
Tomatoes for processing is an important activity in the Brazilian agriculture sector.
Brazil usually is ranked as the 6th tomato producer worldwide.
Annual production has ranged from 700000 to 1000000 t over the past few years.
Tomatoes in Brazil are processed into a wide variety of products including paste, pulp and other more specialized sauces.
In 1989 the total value of all processed tomato products was approximately US$ 300 million and the sector grew 7.0 percent.
Production is concentrated in three different geographic regions: Northeast, Southeast and Center West.
The tomato industry has experienced major changes over the last two decades with a tremendous expansion occurring particularly in the Sao Francisco River Valley, northeastern Brazil in the 1980's.
Production is constrained by several pest, diseases and weather-related problems.
Open pollinated cultivars are prevalent mainly UC82 types and locally bred materials (IPA 5 and IPA 6). F1 hybrids were introduced over the past 3 years mostly those rootknot nematodes resistant.
The future prospects of the tomato industry in Brazil are promising and there is a trend toward continuing expansion in the 1990's.
However this is critically dependent on varietal improvement and management practices to address some of the high priority constraints that exist within the different producing zones.
