ISHS Acta Horticulturae 301: IV International Symposium on Processing Tomatoes

THE TOMATO FRUITS DIRECT INOCULATION AS A TECHNIQUE OF VIRUS SYMPTOMS REPRODUCTION.

Authors:   A. Crescenzi, A. Ragozzino
Abstract:
The experimental reproduction of symptoms induced by virus infection on tomato fruits is accomplished only with difficulty inoculating the leaves. The plant growth stage and the environmental conditions within which plant is grown influence, most probably, the symptom expression.

The objective of this study was to verify the possibility to experi mentally reproduce virus symptoms on tomato fruits by inoculating then directly.

The inocula used were strains of the following viruses: Tomato Mosaic Virus, Cucumber Mosaic Virus and CMV + CARNA 5.

The experiment was carried on tomato varieties grown in a conditioned greenhouse.

The results were positive on almost the hundred percent of the inocu lated fruits.

The technique is particularly useful in demostrating the role of a single virus in the symptoms production.
