ISHS Acta Horticulturae 301: IV International Symposium on Processing Tomatoes

PERENNIAL WEED MANAGEMENT ON PROCESSING TOMATOES IN THE LOWER VALLEY OF RIO NEGRO, ARGENTINA.

Author:   A.A. Dall'Armellina
Abstract:
Production of processing tomatoes is a very important item within the horticultural activity in irrigated area of the Rio Negro River. The most serious problem farmers have to face today is that of the perennial weeds.

During several years various experiments have been carried out at the IDEVI-INTA Experiment Station of the Lower Valley, trying to obtain an adequate management of the two main perennial weeds which affect this crop: field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) the most common in the Rio Negro irrigated areas and Russian Knapweed (Centaurea repens L.), found mainly in the Lower Valley.

These experiments have consisted in : 1) Use of herbicides in non selective way before sowing. 2) previous sowing application of herbicide and selective herbicide directly on the crop and 3) the complement between non selective applied herbicides and competing crops (i.e. pastures).

The results show clearly how difficult it is to control these weed. About the non-selective herbicide application, the most effective control was obtained by GLYPHOSATE applied after full flowering. The selective herbicide have showed the effectiveness of ACIFLUORFEN at 0.75 kg/ha applied in three times 20 days after emergence. Nonselective herbicides and competing crops, showed the highest control level , 90 to 95 % but this treatment is long lasting and expensive.
