Abstract:
The tomato fruit borer (Neoleucinodes elegantalis Guen.)(Lepidoptera: Pyraustidae), and three leafminer species Phthorimaea aperculella (Zeller), Scrobipalpula absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) and Liriomyza sp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae) are the major tomato-pest insects in Venezuela.
In the past, their control relied on absolute chemical control, resulting in collateral problems as: ineffective control, pest-insect resurgence after spraying, reduction of natural enemies populations, human and animal intoxications, increase in production costs, and environmental contamination.
Through results of research done in the last 10 years an Integrated Pest-Insects Management Program has been designed which includes an appropriate combination of cultural, biological, ethological and chemical measures that have reduced a 50% of insecticide sprays.
