Abstract:
Different effects of some fungicides normally used for the protection of tomatoes for processing were evaluated during a three-year study by comparing a conventional method based on periodical treatments (PT) with an integrated pest management program (IPMP). The beginning of the treatments by the latter protection method was established according to a scheme developed by the Plant Protection Service of Regione Emilia-Romagna, foreseeing the probable appearance of Phythophtora infestans.
The interventions were carried out depending on weather conditions and the occurrence of infections on unprotected test plants.
The purpose of the IPMP is to employ chemicals only when they are really necessary, avoiding any useless spreading of products dangerous to the environment.
During the first two years of the experiment, the persistence, if any, of chemicals residues both on fresh and processed tomatoes was also checked.
