Abstract:
Planting systems vary throughout the world.
They are determined by labor availability, technology, economics, and climate.
California has an excellent climate for processing tomato production, larger mechanized farming operations, limited but expensive labor, and high technology.
The most used planting system is direct seeding.
The use of expensive hybrid seed has increased plant establishment cost significantly in the past ten years.
By the year 2000, it is possible that all tomato producers will use hybrid seeds exclusively.
The use of anti-crustants and fungicides to ensure plant emergence will be used.
Larger-vined cultivars will allow for a much reduced plant population to reduce seeding costs.
Transplanting will be used more, but only for special problem areas.
Plastic will be used for earliness and protection from pests.
