ISHS Acta Horticulturae 301: IV International Symposium on Processing Tomatoes

USAGE OF HYBRID CULTIVARS IN THE PROCESSING TOMATO INDUSTRY

Author:   P. I. Boleda
Abstract:
From 1985 to 1990 the usage of hybrid cultivars in the California processing industry increased from 26% to 52% of total tonnage delivered to processors. The increase has been more dramatic in Chile where it is estimated that 70% of the acreage is planted to hybrid cultivars. Disease resistances specially to nematodes, in combination with reliable field productions and good processing characteristics have been major factors contributing the increase usage of hybrid cultivars. High production seed costs and critical quality control measures will be the biggest constraints in producing the necessary seed volumes in order to supply and expand the market. Private breeding programs have benefited from the proprietary nature of hybrid cultivars.
