Abstract:
An investigation using histological and SEM analyses have been carried out in Bellevalia romana shoot-forming callus with the aim of getting a deeper understanding of the developmental sequences leading to organ formation.
Definate meristematic zones at different developmental stages have been observed in the callus.
In some cases structures resembling somatic embryos have been found outside the callus.
Very often these meristematic zones appeared surrounded by a thick wall-like structure resembling a layer of endodermal cells.
In all young meristematic centers mitoses were absent.
The SEM analysis supported the histological observations.
The results are discussed in relation to reports on morphogenetic processes in this and in other experimental systems.
