Abstract:
Non-conformity of in vitro propagated plants has been observed in 4 varieties of globe artichoke : Violet de Provence, Tudela, Niscemese, Liscio sardo.
After in vitro propagation, the pastel variant type of these varieties occured at a rate which increased with subculture number, up to 100 %. Leaves of the pastel variant are more divided than the normal type.
Their harvest date is delayed, making them unsuitable for autumn or early spring production.
Micropropagation increased the frequency of the variation which naturally occurs at a rate of 1 per 1000 among the offshoots of the early mediterranean varieties.
These are supposed to have a chimeral structure.
The second variant, bull, which also naturally occurs in these varieties was observed after micropropagation, often in association with pastel variant characteristics.
