ISHS Acta Horticulturae 30: Symposium on Strawberry under Protection

SOME EXPERIMENTS ON THE GROWING OF STRAWBERRIES UNDER POLYTHENE TUNNELS IN IRELAND

Authors:   N. Rath, T.F. O'Callaghan
Abstract:
Strawberry production under polythene cloches is a small but growing part of the Irish horticultural industry. Until recently very little experimental work had been carried out on that method of strawberry growing in Ireland. Most growing-practices were based on results from abroad and on the personal experience of growers. Accordingly several trials were laid down at the Soft Fruit Research Centre, Clonroche to determine the most suitable cultural methods and cultivars for Irish conditions.

The trials now being reported were covered with polythene tunnels which were 56 cm wide at the base and 43 cm high. The tunnels were supported by 8 gauge wire hoops spaced 76 cm apart and were covered with 250 gauge polythene.
