ISHS Acta Horticulturae 30: Symposium on Strawberry under Protection

THE USE OF SYSTEMIC FUNGICIDES

Author:   G. Gilles
Abstract:
The use of fungicides in strawberry cultures under protection ran up against some difficulties: burning-spots on leaves and fruits, visible residues of the compounds, enhanced since the strawberries receive all the required water by means of a system of pipes on the soil.

This system of watering might be useful in the control of some parasites by adding a systematic fungicide to the irrigation water. The results obtained until now on Botrytis, mildew and on the side-effects against red spider are presented.

A second possibility for the use of systematic fungicides is the control of the root-diseases (caused by Verticillium and probably also by other fungi) which cause amongst others a withering of the strawberry-plants at picking-time.

Encouraging results have been obtained with a suspension of a systemic fungicide by watering-trials in glasshouse and/or on waiting-plots.

Noteworthy is also an interesting result obtained with Dexone against Phytophthora cactorum.
