ISHS Acta Horticulturae 30: Symposium on Strawberry under Protection

EXPERIMENTAL CULTURE OF STRAWBERRY PLANT UNDER PLASTIC GREENHOUSE IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE

Authors:   C. Wacquant, J.P. Thicoïpé
Abstract:
In the South-East part of France, the use of mulch and of different kinds of shelters makes it possible to extend the calendar of production.

The harvest may begin:

- On May 5th in the open air
- On April 30th on mulch
- On April 20th under small tunnel
- From April 5th to 10th in cold greenhouse
- On March 15th in heated greenhouse

The strawberry plant may be planted in the greenhouse in summer or prepared in the open air and planted just before being forced. Another possibility is offered by the plastic greenhouse which may be moved onto a culture planted in summer in the open air.

The experiments have been tried mainly with the Surprise des Halles and Gorella varieties.

As a rule, the use of "frigo" plants gives higher yields and thicker fruit.

Plastic mulching improves the marketable production.

Photoperiodic lighting of low density acts mainly upon the growth and has little effect upon the production.
