ISHS Acta Horticulturae 3: Symposium on Work Study in Horticulture

THE IMPORTANCE OF ERGONOMIC RESEARCH IN HORTICULTURE

Author:   J. H. van Loon
Abstract:
In ergonomic research the relation between the worker and his work is studied. Various factors of the total work situation are examined in view of an adequate adjustment to the worker, within the limits of his capacities. Ergonomic work' improvement aims at eliminating unfavourable and harmful effects and at creating optimal working conditions.

Needless exertion should be avoided. Heavy work ought to be lightened or alternated with light work or with sufficient rest pauses. During the work a comfortable posture and easy movements are recommended. The choice of tools and the construction of machines should be influenced by ergonomic considerations.

Fitting the job to the worker contributes to promoting the health and the well-being of the worker, to making the work more attractive and to increasing safety, efficiency and productivity.
