Abstract:
The Guernsey glasshouse industry has 1,150 acres of glass, of which approximately 1,000 acres is devoted to tomatoes.
Only about 12% of tomato growers follow tomatoes with a second crop, usually flowers.
The industry consists mainly of small units. 65% of holdings are less than one third of an acre, and account for 27% of the area. 31% of the holdings are between one third of an acre and one acre, and account for 46% of the area.
Even the large areas under one management consist of small, scattered units. 36% of the glass is over 44 years old.
Only 33% is of modern construction.
