ISHS Acta Horticulturae 299: Forum on Strategies for Horticultural Societies in the 1990's, XXIII IHC

ROMANIA

Author:   V. Cociu
Abstract:
In Romania, the Horticultural Society was founded in 1913 with Charles Farando as the first president. The society played an important role in organization and development of Romanian horticulture, in organization of secondary and higher education, in promoting the technical progress, especially by running "Horticultural Review" and yearly exhibitions of horticultural plants (mainly flowers).

During 1923–1940, the Romanian Horticultural Society organized four National and International Congresses keeping close relationships with similar societies from France, Switzerland, Germany and other countries. In 1945 the Horticultural Society was dissolved. In 1949 the training of horticulturists (different stages), the horticultural news and establishment of horticultural institutions were taken over by the State through the Ministry of Agriculture and special departments of Agricultural Schools as well as the Faculty of Horticulture.

In 1948 the review "Garden, Vineyard and the Orchard" was published for the farmers' and specialists' use. Presently, it is still published under a different title "Horticultura" but is for the specialists use only.

In 1957, a Research Institute for Hortiviticulture in Bucharest-Banease was founded, which had almost the same aims as the old society for horticulture which are as follows: organization of competitions and plant exhibitions, development of connections with the foreign specialists, development of hortiviticultural research as well as its promotion. Information is distributed through the monthly publishing of "Horticultura" review and the subjects dealing with the merit of Institute. The "Scientific Works" of the institute (10 volumes) included the research results recorded in horticulture and the other books, monographs and "pomology of Romania" (8 volumes) as well as "Ampelography of Romania", published by Romanian Academy, presented the news from our country and abroad.

Starting in 1967, the Research Institute for Hortiviticulture was divided into three specialized institutes: Fruit-growing at Pitesti-Maracineni (Arges district), Viticulture at Valea Calugareasca (Prahova district) and Vegetables-Floriculture at Vidra near Bucharest. Each of the institutes took over the obligation of research development of releasing of results especially in State farms and Agricultural Cooperatives. The "Horticultura" review is common for the three institutes but each institute publishes their own scientific works monographs, books, and other horticultural issues.

In 1976, "The National Commission" for ornamental plants, floriculture and landscape architecture was established. That commission organized 13 flower exhibitions named "Simfonia lalelelor" including also symposia and flower contests. During these annual occasions, a great number of professors and specialists meet coming from all horticultural centers of Romania.

The amateurs and private horticulturists are not yet organized. There is a plan for re-establishing the Society for Horticulture in Romania soon.
