ISHS Acta Horticulturae 299: Forum on Strategies for Horticultural Societies in the 1990's, XXIII IHC

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETIES IN SOUTH-WEST EUROPE - ITALY - ITALIAN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY*

Author:   S. Sansavini
Abstract:
The Italian Society for Horticulture (SOI) is established to promote studies, research, exhibits and initiatives designed to further the progress, improvement, dissemination and development of the horticultural sciences, the preservation of the nation's gardens and of its arboreal and horti-floricultural heritage as well as the ecological conservation of its territory, the development of mutual understanding with similar national and international societies, especially the ISHS and the participation in international events in sympathy with the purposes of the Society. The SOI is a non-profit organization and does not pursue or engage in any political activity whatsoever or defend corporative interests of any kind.

The Society has three sections (see appendix) which issue circulars and programs of meetings and symposia for members when necessary. And, insofar as its members include scholars, researchers, extension agents, growers and enthusiasts, the SOI is interprofessional. Membership is open to all applicants and requires sponsorship by two members in good standing and the approval of the Presidential Council.

The SOI is a cultural organization to promote initiatives furthering technical progress, and the services it provides either directly or indirectly are paid for exclusively by means of annual membership dues. No part of the society's earnings can inure to the benefit of any individual having a personal or private interest in the activities of the society. The services rendered to the society by its members are entirely of a voluntary nature and based on the principle of mutual aid. Membership in the society is its own reward, and each member is called upon to put his or her expertise at the service of others.

The SOI publishes a bimonthly bulletin which carries no advertising. It is possible to subscribe to it without being a member yet the subscription costs the same as a year's dues. The society and the University of Florence had jointly published until 1986 the journal Rivista dell'Ortoflorofrutticoltura Italiana (6 issues yearly). Since 1987, the journal has been published under a new masthead by the Istituto di Coltivazioni Arboree of the University of Florence with the help of a yearly grant from CNR.

The SOI also publishes the proceedings of the meetings and conferences it organizes. Unless otherwise agreed upon with sponsors or co-organizing public agencies, these publications are free of charge to participating members, and available to the other members either at significant discount or simply at the cost of postal charges. For example, the Fruit Section alone has published more than 100 volumes of proceedings over the past 15 years, each with a press run of 1500–2000 copies.
