ISHS Acta Horticulturae 299: Forum on Strategies for Horticultural Societies in the 1990's, XXIII IHC

LATIN AMERICAN CONFEDERATION OF HORTICULTURE

Author:   J. Muller
Abstract:
In July of 1983 in San Miguel de Tucaman, Argentina, the president of the Brazilian Society of Horticulture proposed the idea for a Latin American integration in Horticulture. This idea was supported by the Argentinian Horticulture Association and together there was an intense exchange of information through publication and meetings.

The first meeting to discuss the proposed philosophy for the Latin American integration was held in July of 1984 in Jaboticabal (SP), Brazil, under the name of First Latin American Horticulture Meeting. Colleagues from Chile, Uruguay and Guatemala with their respective horticulture organizations joined in the integration effort. Together they formed a Commission for the Latin American Confederation of Horticulture (COLHOR) with a meeting held at Pelotas, RS, Brazil on 7 November 1985. Final confederation was created on 20 September 1986 in La Plata, Argentina during the Second Latin American Meeting of Horticulture. Then the basic rules, election of the board of directors and an executive commission were formed for 1986/88. Besides the countries from Latin America, Iberic countries were invited as participants of COLHOR due to the ethical relationships of these countries with the Latin American ones.

The main objective of COLHOR is to promote integration, cultural exchange and common wealth of the Latin American peoples, independently of creed, race and political system. Other objectives are: a) to promote and divulge studies and research in horticultural sciences; b) to promote training of human resources as well as to exchange information between the members; c) to promote teaching of horticultural sciences at every level; and d) to promote consumption and better use of fruits and vegetables. In order to achieve these objectives international meetings are held every two years in different countries of Latin America, with the purpose of presenting and discussing research work. At the same time other activities are conducted to attain the objectives, such as symposia, conferences concerning teaching methods, research, extension services and production on subjects of regional interest. Other activities include the publishing of the Latin American Horticulture Magazine and development of close relationships with the International Society of Horticultural Science and other related societies.

COLHOR will offer proposals to official organizations and universities, including studies to stimulate development of horticulture.

COLHOR is formed by the members, a Board of Directors and an Executive Board. The members belong to three categories: a) effective members - are members of each society of each member country affiliated to COLHOR; b) honorary members - they include scientists who have given scientific contribution either to the scientific community or to COLHOR; and c) cooperative members - are people or official organizations which have given any financial support to COLHOR.
