ISHS Acta Horticulturae 299: Forum on Strategies for Horticultural Societies in the 1990's, XXIII IHC

CANADIAN SOCIETY FOR HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE

Author:   E.N. Estabrooks
Abstract:
Since 1955 when the Canadian Society of Horticultural Science (CSHS) was started the prime purpose has been to exchange information among its members. CSHS is a small group of less than 400 in a large country stretching 8,000 kms. Communications have been difficult and of prime concern to the organization. An annual meeting has been the main opportunity to exchange information. This annual meeting is usually held in conjunction with other professional agricultural societies under the umbrella of the Agricultural Institute of Canada. Often there are CSHS regional meetings as well, but they are not always held annually.

CSHS has supported the publication of research work. We have supported the Canadian Journal of Plant Science. CSHS has also been involved in education and in the past has had a diploma in horticulture.

At present, there is interest in the development of working groups within CSHS, so that persons in a particular discipline could meet with his/her colleagues every 2 or 3 years for in depth discussions.

CSHS has recognized the importance of working closely with the horticulture industry. To reinforce that tie, CSHS has recently created a new membership category for those in the industry, but who may not be eligible as a professional member.

Those of us who belong to horticulture societies should keep in mind that we work with the whole economic plant, unlike some other scientific societies.

I believe that those of us working with the horticulture industry and with whole plants as a crop, have a role to play in bringing about coordination and cooperation within this discipline of horticulture.
