JSHS comprises four sections: fruit trees, vegetables, ornamentals and postharvest technology. The society is open to all who are interested in horticulture, so that the members are interprofessional.

The society publishes a quarterly entitled the Journal of the Japanese Society for Horticultural Science. The 59th volume of the journal was published in 1990. The press run is 3,000 for every issue. Table 1 shows the number of papers published in each section of the journal from 1985 to 1989. JSHS also publishes a conference proceedings, under the title of Journal of the Japanese Society for Horticultural Science Supplement, the press run is 2,500 for every issue. The number of presentations in the proceedings from 1986 to 1990 is shown in Table 2.

Scientific activities of the society include a quarterly scientific journal, and a society conference held twice a year, in spring and autumn. Active members present their voluntary contributions only in oral sessions, which are held separately for four sections: fruit trees, vegetables, ornamentals, and postharvest technology.

The conference proceedings are published prior to the conference. The number of presentations at the autumn conference in 1990 was 381. Four symposia corresponding to the four sections, and two or three professional excursions are organized by JSHS, following each autumn conference.

JSHS awards prizes to the best papers including practical contributions to horticulture every year. The prizes are awarded in four categories; to the member who has accomplished an excellent research, to the junior member who is elaborating his/her research and is expected to further develop it, to the member who has contributed to the progress of technique or industry in horticulture through his/her research, and to the grower who has contributed to the development of horticultural industry, or the publisher who has contributed to the development of horticultural research.
