Horticultural society aims are to promote research and scientific activities, education of vocational school, faculty and farmers including horticulture, agriculture and livestock production.

The Yugoslav Federation is divided into different sections: fruit, vegetable, ornamental plants, as well as on other sections like agriculture.

The Yugoslav Federation and their associations, including the Yugoslav Society for Pomology Science publish scientific journals, technicians journals, congress, symposia and conference proceedings. Books and monographs are published as needed, but journals are published four times a year. Proceedings are published after the congresses, symposia, and conferences. Each year there are symposia, conferences or meetings held; e.g. on plum and prune in Gradacac (SR Bosna and Hercegovina), on peach in Grocka (SR Serbia), on raspberry in Valjevo (Serbia), on small fruits in Celic (SR Bosna and Hercegovina). A Congress of Pomology is held every four years.

Coordination of research is accomplished between Republics and Province Associations. Professional trips are organized, from time to time, in Yugoslavia and abroad during, before or after the congress or symposia. Each Republic and Province organizes exhibitions of fruits, vegetables, flowers, nursery plants, canned fruits and vegetables each year in Beograd, Zagreb and in Ijublijana on the industrial exhibition and book fair for technical and scientific equipment.
