Abstract:
The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) fosters international scientific cooperation and exchange primarily through its International Horticultural Congress (IHC) every four years.
At the 23rd IHC, held in Florence, Italy, in August 1990, a special Forum, entitled 'Strategies for Horticultural Societies in the 1990's was convened to focus attention on the patterns and formats developed by the national hortsocieties of several countries.
Its purpose was to assess the context in which horticultural organizations have emerged, and are emerging, throughout the world and to provide a brief summary of their organizational formats and their development plans with a view to furthering horticultural cooperation both nationally and internationally.
The drive toward 'building horticultural bridges' has led to joint research projects among European countries and between them and other nations throughout the world.
The Forum proved to be a representative sampling rather than an exhaustive accounting of hortsocieties and their activities as not all countries that have societies were able to attend the 23rd IHC and participate in the Forum.
It was organized around two main themes: 'Brief Descriptions of Horticultural Societies', featuring the most salient aspects of given societies, and the 'Role of Horticultural Societies', which included broad descriptions of their current and future activities.
