EFFECT OF DIFFERENT RATES OF SUCROSE ON VASE LIFE OF ROSE 'SERENA' AT LOW TEMPERATURES. |

| Abstract:
The possibility of storing for some time the flowers at low temperature in order to sell them at a more convenient time and to allow transportation on a long distance maintaining a good quality is a very interesting issue. This study was designed to determine the effect of different periods of low temperatures on vase life of rose 'Serena'. The flowers before cold storage were pulsed with different levels of sucrose. The flowers pulsed with 60–80–100 g.1-1 of sucrose after storage for 3 days at 2°C had a useful vase life not significantly different from that of check (11 days); in the same way the flowers pulsed with 80–100 g·1-1 and stored for 6 days had a vase life not different from those kept in distilled water immediately after the arrival. The roses 'Serena', stored at the tight bud stage, opened flower and maintained a very good quality when pulsed with high quantities (80–100 g·1-1) of sucrose and kept in refrigerator for 3 days. | |
