Abstract:
Among the different varieties of Primula vulgaris, the red variety has a problem with an apparently inexplicable collapse during transport or early in the post harvest life.
Two experiments showed that the extent of collapsing was dependent on the growing conditions, but it was not possible to find out which growth factors were the important ones.
In the second experiment the collapsing was also clearly dependent on the post-harvest temperature with 20°C having much more collapsed plants than 13°C. The results also indicates that the collapsing may be a result of an early attack of larvae of Sciaridae (fungus gnat larvae).
