Abstract:
This study was designed to determine the changes in the contents of starch, glucose, fructose and the sum of soluble sugars in ovaries /in comparison with corollas/ from cut "Sonia" roses stored at 2°C and kept at or transfered to 20°C. Soluble sugars, extracted from freeze-dried material, were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography and starch was determined enzymically.
In general, the pattern of changes in carbohydrates was similar among the roses placed directly at 20°C or previously cold-stored for different periods of time /up to 12 days/. In comparison to corollas starch level was very low in ovaries falling by more than 50% during first 3 days, both at 20°C and 2°C. Initially ovaries of freshly cut roses were richer in soluble sugars than respective corollas.
Concomittant decreases in the sums of soluble sugars in petals and ovaries between the two last sampling dates did not indicate translocation of metabolites within a wilting rose flower.
No relationship was found in ovaries between changes in starch and soluble sugar contents in any class of flowers.
