ISHS Acta Horticulturae 298: Hortifroid, V International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamental Plants; Importance of Cold in Ornamental Horticulture

SCREENING OF POTTED PLANTS FOR BARE-ROOT TRANSPORTATION IN COOLERS

Author:   J. Nowak
Abstract:
Eight bare-root foliage plant genera were subjected to dark storage durations of 7, 14 or 21 days at 15°C. Their ability to withstand these conditions was compared with the storability of plants stored in pots. Howea forsteriana, Mascarena verschaffeltii, Schefflera actinophylla, Schefflera arboricola 'Compacta' and 'Gold Capella', and Yucca aloifolia bare-root plants were not more sensitive to storage conditions than potted plants. They withstand at least 21 day dark storage without serious losses in plant grade. Bare-root Philodendron selloum plants tolerated simulated shipping for 14 days, Maranta leuconeura 'Fascinator' and 'Kerchoviana' for 7 days. Bare-root Codiaeum variegatum 'Bravo' and Cordyline terminalis plants were not suited even to 7 days dark shipment.
