A PRE-STORAGE SUCROSE PULSE PROTECTS CUT LEUCADENDRON VAR. "SILVAN RED" DURING LONG TERM DRY STORAGE AT 1°C.

Keywords:   long-term storage, sucrose pulse, vase life
Abstract:
Stems of Leucadendron var. "Silvan Red" were stored at 1°C for 42 days. To test the effect of sucrose pulses, blooms were pulsed at 1°C or 20°C in solutions containing 100 ppm chlorine, 2% and 20% sucrose, and 250 ppm citric acid (solution ph 3.5) for 24h prior to storage. Bunches of 10 stems were wrapped in newsprint and 35 um polyethylene plastic during storage and then rehydrated in distilled water for 24h at 1°C immediately after storage. Pre-storage treatment with 2% sucrose and 100 ppm chlorine resulted in a significant (>45%) increase in vase life after 42 days storage, whilst pre-storage treatment with 20% sucrose and 100 ppm chlorine resulted in an increase in vase life of 300%. Pre-storage solution uptake was affected by the concentration of sucrose. Stems treated with 20% sucrose before storage showed no sign of leaf desiccation compared with controls treated with chlorine only. Pre-storage treatment with high (20%) sucrose solutions, therefore, protected Leucadendron blooms from desiccation damage during storage and contributed to extended post-storage vase life.
